We celebrated our special Family Eucharist at 10am on Christmas Day at St. James Church. After much publicity, our special guest arrived … it was Father Christmas, of course. Although very tired after his night’s work, he popped in to remind us of how his work of “giving with no thought of return” is central to the Christian message.
We wish all our website visitors a happy, peaceful and joyous Christmas and New Year! But Christmas isn’t over yet! We have a number of special events coming up at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire, in addition to our regular worship times. Click here to find out more – we would love you to join us!
The congregation of St James has been out and about this month, singing the Good News of Jesus’ birth, in the most unlikely places ….
On Saturday 16th December, the Forton Light Orchestra (made up of the St. James music group and friends) played Christmas Carols on the FanZone stage at Ewood Park, Blackburn, before the match against Charlton Athletic. We had Susan on keyboard, Rebecca on trumpet, Daisy on clarinet, Malcolm on saxophone, Andrew and David on vocals and Mark on violin. It was a great event, and four of the group stayed to watch the match afterwards, with Blackburn Rovers winning 2-0.
Wednesday 20th December saw members of the music group out and about again, this time singing and playing to the residents of Stanley Lodge and Oakfield Nursing Homes, both in the Forton locality. The residents always greatly enjoy this annual event and are very appreciative. We love bringing some Christmas cheer and watching their faces light up!
Saturday 23rd December heard our voices once again lifted in joyful Christmas song, this time at Forton Motorway Services. This is one of our favourite venues to sing carols, as the travellers passing through are so surprised and pleased to see us. Some get in to the spirit of Christmas by taking a little extra time to sing with us in worship before continuing on their travels.
You too can come and sing with us at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire, over the Christmas season, just click here to find out about the services that will be taking place. We look forward to meeting you!
This year, a big feature of our Christingle service was a secret item made by our young adults in Youth Church. It turned out to be a giant Christingle, 2 feet diameter, which was hidden somewhere around the church.
Our intrepid younger children didn’t take long to find it though, and then we had the usual fun of making our Christingles (with normal sized oranges), and thinking about the meaning behind each part that we added.
We would love you to join us for our Christmas, and future, events here at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire. Click here to find out what’s going on.
04 Winter 2017 Spotlight
The occasional news magazine of St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire.
Our shoebox service took place at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire, on the 5th November 2017, in aid of Operation Christmas Child.
As always, our congregation brought in boxes they had filled with suitable gifts for a boy or girl who lives in a foreign country, where Christmas gifts are an unaffordable luxury.
We are proud to confirm that this year, our congregation gathered together enough gifts to fill 43 boxes, which have now been sent off on their journey across the world.
The St. James Annual Harvest Supper took place at Forton Village Hall on Saturday 14th October 2017. A delicious hot pot supper, followed by homemade apple pie, was enjoyed by all. Members of the congregation of St. James were joined by friends and family from a number of local villages in our part of Lancashire.
Following this, Forton locals generated their own home-spun entertainment, with everything from humorous poems that had everyone giggling, a superb female quartet, a solo violin medley, to haunting love songs from John Denver. The finale was a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, complete with waving Union Jack flags. And yes, it’s official, Elvis was in the building!
Watch out for this event happening again at the same time next year, when we can all look forward to another equally entertaining evening. Many, many thanks to the organising team, ably led by Kath Walling.
Our Christmas shoebox appeal will be launched at our 10.00am all-age service on 5th November 2017, at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire.
You can bring presents to go in a shoebox on this date, or you can take away one of the pre-made boxes to fill over the next month, and return to the all-age service that will take place at the beginning of December. If you don’t feel you can fill a shoe box, please bring just one or a few items to go in a shoebox, which will be filled on your behalf.
Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you at the service!
Sunday 1st October, 10.00am, All age communion and Harvest Service at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire. Please bring a food donation, either canned/packaged foods which will be donated to the Food Bank in Lancaster, or fresh produce which will be donated to our local care homes Oakfield House and Stanley Lodge. In addition, you can find out all about Tree Aid – what is it? Come along and find out!
In addition, the church will be open from 2pm to 5pm on the same day, for cream teas, served by our lovely congregation.
The theme of this family worship was based on the scripture according to Matthew ch16, v21-28. This passage tells of Jesus beginning to speak of his own death, and he instructs his disciples – and all of us – to follow him. We looked at the theme of our own journey through life, and how the day to day choices we make influence whether we are truly following Christ. Everyone made a little crafted map foot, to hang from their car mirror, or wherever they wish, as a reminder to keep our personal journeys on track for Jesus.
We would love you to join us in worship and fellowship here at St. James Church, Shireshead, Forton, Lancashire. Click here to find out about events at our church.
